With spring upon us new artists will be added to the painted doors line up and well have a fine selection of large scale walls by the NUART Aberdeen which is kicking off tomorrow with a host of international talents. I wanted to share all of the completed doors to date and shine a bit more light on the door artists, collating them all before part 2 kicks off. Already the doors have had a big impact on local business and the people who frequent them such as Contour Café and Cafe52 on the Green. With a clear view of Katie Guthrie and Cosmic Nuggets doors, Contour is the perfect spot to get some lunch and a perfect view.
With the doors stretching from just off the Green to the far end of Langstane Place you can have yourself a nice little walk along the back streets, avoiding the bustle of Union Street. Its a nice way to connect up some Aberdeen's more overlooked areas and really conveys for me what art can do, in making us look at our surroundings a little differently and seeing the beauty in them. Its also provided a great platform for the artists and allowed them to try something new. For me its provided the opportunity to discover new artists, something I strive to do anyway but I can honestly say I was blown away by Joe Fann and Kelly Ann Cairns. The diversity of styles and approaches is also testament to the creativity that exists in Aberdeen and proves a point for me that Aberdeen is very much a city of culture.
The project has been documented and catalogued using the Painted Doors instagram account and the #painteddoorsabdn hash tag which has allowed people to engage with the project in a fun way. I've been snapping away and made up a full photo list of all the artists in action and their finished doors and its quite impressive to see them all lined up. In order of appearance you have Shelagh Swanson, Katie Guthrie, Cosmic Nuggets, Mary Butterworth, Ade Adesina, Caitlin Hynes, Tomasz Wrobel, Stu Allan & Ugly People, Ink Minx Tattoo, Kilo Alpha, Joe Fan, Elph, Peter Sheridan, Inkie, Betarok75, Lindsay, David McCracken, Catherine Ross, Kelly Anne Cairns and Jetpack Dinosaur.
Painted Doors have also produced a map which covers the first run of doors (see below) with more in the works. For me this type of creativity has always been around although maybe not so visibly but the project has served as a great lead into NUART Aberdeen which has really blown me away. I'm glad that the streets are being filled with fun and engaging work and this is only the beggining!
