I was lucky enough to film the Yuck N Yum guest lecture at Grays last week and was pretty impressed with what the guys had to say and by how much they have accomplished over the years, setting up a zine aimed at promoting artists and their practice which has now gone on to become a Dundee institution, if not a Scottish arts institution! Their mission statement is simple, "To make zines and distribute art".
It was great to hear about how it all came about through one person, how its naturally grown into what it is, how event's have popped up around the zine like the annual AGK event where artists are invited to submit their own karaoke video's which are then shown and sung along too, this also serves as their annual members meeting! Needless to say I will be making the effort to get a submission in for next year and hopefully make it to the meeting to have a bash at singing some Lady GaGa & Bruce Springsteen!
So Yuck N Yum seem like the kind of people I'd want to be friends with and are doing the kind of community building work that I think is gonna be essential if people want to have a good and well connected art scene up here in Aberdeen, but they're also showing that it can be done out side of the central belt, it can be done with little to no funding and that you can have fun while doing it!
They produce a new zine on a quarterly basis and the submission deadline for the next zine is the 1st of December but keep sending in work after this date as it might be accepted for a future issue, also they will be on hand showing off their specially curated wall display at the DCA (Dundee Contemporary Arts) on the 24th as part of the Book Week exhibition so be sure to pop past if you can! You can keep in the loop via facebook and twitter. Mmmmm Yummy!
